Crete road trip guides

Essential Crete travel guides by rental car

Use these quick local notes to choose the right car category, pick-up location and driving plan. The goal is simple: request the correct vehicle for your route before you arrive in Chania.

Balos Lagoon by car

Balos is one of the most searched Crete day trips from Chania. The final track from Kaliviani is rough, narrow and dusty, so an SUV such as Jeep Renegade, Skoda Kamiq, Peugeot 2008, Suzuki Vitara or similar is the safer request. For easier travel, park at Kissamos and take the boat.

Balos car rentalSUV rental ChaniaKissamos PortGramvousa boat

Elafonisi Beach by car

Elafonisi is usually easy with a small or compact car because the road is paved, but summer traffic and parking fill quickly. Leave early from Chania, keep water in the car and ask for baby seats if travelling as a family.

Elafonisi by carfamily car Cretecheap car hire ChaniaChania day trip

Falassarna sunset drive

Falassarna is one of the easiest west-Crete beach drives from Chania, with a wide open coast and famous sunset. Economy cars work well for couples, while families usually prefer a compact, SUV or 7-seater for beach bags and comfort.

Samaria Gorge parking plan

For Samaria Gorge, most visitors drive to Omalos/Xyloskalo early, park near the entrance, then return from the south coast by ferry and bus/taxi plan. Tell us your route if you need a car that fits hiking gear and passengers.

South coast freedom

Paleochora, Sougia, Sfakia, Frangokastello and the villages around the White Mountains are much easier with your own car. Keep fuel above half and expect mountain roads, narrow turns and slower driving times than Google sometimes suggests.

Knossos & Spinalonga route

For longer Crete routes from Chania to Heraklion, Knossos, Agios Nikolaos, Elounda and Spinalonga, request a comfortable compact, family car or SUV. One-way airport delivery can also be requested depending on dates and rental length.

Car delivery where your holiday actually starts

Many visitors do not want to search for an office after a flight, ferry, late arrival or family check-in. Request delivery to the place that makes sense: airport arrivals, hotel reception, villa address, port meeting point or a one-way return location.

Food stops by car

Restaurants, tavernas and villages worth driving to

A rental car in Crete is not only for beaches. It is also the easiest way to reach mountain tavernas, seaside fish restaurants, village bakeries, wineries and sunset dinner spots outside the normal bus routes.

Chania food routes

Drive from Chania to Theriso, Vamos, Apokoronas villages, Kolymbari, Marathi or Stavros for local tavernas, seafood and quieter evening routes. Parking is easier outside the Venetian harbour.

Wine, villages & inland Crete

For travellers who want more than beaches, a compact or SUV is useful for inland roads around Archanes, Peza, Anogia, Margarites and the foothills of the White Mountains.

South coast lunch stops

Routes to Paleochora, Sougia, Hora Sfakion and Frangokastello are perfect with a rental car because you can stop for food, photos and beaches without waiting for a bus or taxi.

Weather & season guide

When is the best time to rent a car in Crete?

Crete changes a lot by season. The best car depends on temperature, luggage, mountain routes, beach parking and how far you plan to drive from Chania.

April, May & June

Spring is ideal for road trips, gorges, villages and archaeological sites. Roads are calmer, temperatures are easier, and a small economy car is often enough unless you plan mountain routes with luggage.

spring Crete car rentalMay car hire Chaniagorge tripsvillage routes

July & August

High season means early starts, hot parked cars and busy beach roads. Air-conditioning, enough luggage room and hotel delivery matter. Families should request a compact, SUV, 7-seater or 9-seater early.

September & October

Late summer is excellent for swimming, day trips and longer drives from Chania to Heraklion, Rethymno or the south coast. It is also a strong time for SUVs and convertibles, depending on availability.

From economy cars to 9-seaters, with clear insurance wording

No deposit blocked wording

Visitors often search for car rental in Chania with no deposit blocked. The quote explains the difference clearly: CDW is included with an excess that is not blocked, while optional FDW gives zero excess for covered damage.

Automatic car rental

Automatic vehicles are popular for airport arrivals, mountain roads and drivers who do not want a manual gearbox abroad. Request small automatic, compact automatic or SUV automatic depending on luggage and route.

Large family & group travel

For families, weddings, villa groups and friends travelling together, request 7-seater or 9-seater options early. Minivans and minibuses are limited in high season and depend strongly on dates.

Why rent a car in Chania?

Crete is best explored by car

Chania is the perfect base for exploring western Crete — but public transport will barely scratch the surface. Buses to Elafonisi run twice a day in summer and don't reach Balos at all. The Samaria Gorge, the villages of Sfakia, the hidden beaches of the south coast — all of these require your own wheels.

With a rental car from Chania, you set your own schedule. Leave early to beat the crowds at Elafonisi. Stop at a roadside taverna in Anogia. Take the coastal road through Paleochora at sunset. These are the moments that make a Crete holiday unforgettable — and they're impossible without a car.

Our fleet covers every need: economy cars for solo travellers and couples, SUVs for families or rough tracks to remote beaches, and minivans for groups. Every vehicle comes with CDW insurance, optional FDW zero excess cover, no deposit blocked, unlimited kilometres, and free delivery to your door.

🏖️
Reach the hidden beaches Elafonisi, Balos, Falassarna, Kedrodasos — none are on the bus route
⛰️
Drive the mountain roads Samaria Gorge, Theriso, the White Mountains — spectacular routes only accessible by car
🕰️
Your schedule, not theirs No waiting for buses. Arrive early, stay late, stop wherever you want
🧭
Cross the whole island Chania to Heraklion is 2.5 hrs. One rental, the entire island at your fingertips
Car rental vs taxis in Crete

Which is better for your holiday?

🚗

Rental car

Best for most
Freedom to explore — leave when you want, stop where you want, no waiting
Much cheaper for day trips — a car costs €25–55/day vs €80–120 for a taxi round trip to Elafonisi
Reach beaches taxis won't go — Balos dirt road, Seitan Limania, remote south coast spots
Free delivery to your hotel — we bring the car to you, no need to go anywhere
CDW included · FDW optional zero excess — no deposit blocked for clearer peace of mind
You drive yourself — not ideal after a long night out or if you prefer not to drive abroad
Best for: families, couples, anyone doing more than 2 day trips, travellers who want flexibility
🚕

Taxis & transfers

No driving required — ideal for airport transfers or if you've had a drink
Good for single transfers — airport to hotel is convenient and straightforward
Expensive for day trips — expect €80–150 return to popular beaches, more for remote spots
Limited availability — taxis are scarce outside Chania city, especially in summer
You're on their schedule — agree pick-up time in advance, no flexibility to stay longer
Won't reach remote beaches — most taxi drivers refuse the Balos dirt track entirely
Best for: airport transfers only, or travellers staying in one place and not doing day trips
Local knowledge

Driving in Crete — tips from Chania

Everything you need to know before you get behind the wheel in Crete. Written by locals, not algorithms.

🏖️

Best time to drive to Elafonisi

Book your car and leave Chania by 7:30am at the latest in July and August. The 73 km drive takes about 1h 20min on a good day, but the beach car park fills up completely by 10am in peak season. Early morning light also makes the pink sand and turquoise water spectacular. The road is fully paved and easy in any car.

🛤️

The road to Balos lagoon

Balos is reached via a 9 km unpaved dirt track from the village of Kaliviani (53 km from Chania). The track is rough with loose stones and sharp bends — a high-clearance SUV is strongly recommended. Low-slung cars risk scraping. Alternatively, take a boat from Kissamos harbour and skip the road entirely. The drive itself takes about 25 minutes from the main road.

Fuel stations on the south coast

Fuel up in Chania before heading south. There are stations in Tavronitis, Paleochora and Hora Sfakion, but nothing in between on many south-coast routes. The road through the White Mountains to Sfakia has no services for 50+ km. Keep the tank above half when venturing inland or to remote beaches like Loutro or Agios Pavlos.

🚗

Parking at Samaria Gorge

Parking at Xyloskalo (the top entrance) is free but limited. Arrive before 7am in summer or you'll park 1–2 km back on the road. The gorge walk takes 4–6 hours one way — most people arrange a taxi or bus back from Agia Roumeli on the south coast. Book the return ferry in advance in August.

⚠️

Speed limits & road conditions

Speed limits in Crete: 30 km/h on single-lane town streets, 50 km/h on wider urban roads with two lanes or a median, 90 km/h on open rural roads, 110 km/h on expressways, 130 km/h on the motorway. From January 2026, 30 km/h is the new default on all single-lane urban streets under Greece's updated Road Traffic Code. Mountain roads are narrow with blind bends — locals drive fast, so pull over to let them pass. Watch for goats on the road, especially at dawn and dusk.

🅿️

Parking in Chania Old Town

The Old Town and Venetian harbour area is mostly restricted to residents only — do not attempt to park inside unless you see a clearly marked public space. Police actively enforce this: they will remove your number plates, issue a €30 fine, and confiscate your driving licence for 10 days. It is not worth the risk. Use the municipal car park on Skalidi Street or park near the Municipal Market. Most spots are within a 10–15 minute walk to the harbour. Never park on yellow kerb markings anywhere in Greece — these indicate a strict no-parking zone.
